Grand Return for Olympic Team
The 2012 New Zealand Equestrian Olympic Team received a warm welcome in Cambridge this week as locals turned out in the droves to greet the five-strong team back to their home turf.Led by seasoned campaigner and five times olympic medalist, Mark Todd, the star-studded team arrived in grand style aboard the Pirongia Clydesdales and magnificent show wagon.
The Clydesdales marched proudly through Cambridge township as fans and keen locals waved and cheered for their horsey heroes, who arrived back in New Zealand only hours prior.
The parade took them to the Cambridge Town Hall where the team was greeted by a cheering crowd of fans and guard of honour by Cambridge Pony Club riders. This was followed by an official welcome by Waipa District Mayor, Alan Livingston.
Event co-ordinator, Benjamin Hemi, was thrilled with the outcome of the event and estimates numbers of up to 1000, including a surprise appearance from rowing gold medallist Eric Murray.
Nick and Jill van der Sande of Pirongia Clydesdales say they were "honoured" to be part of such a special event and believe the Clydesdales added a fitting touch to a truly memorable event.
